Photochromic Lenses: What You Need to Know About Light-Changing Lenses

Photochromic lenses are special eyeglass lenses that are clear indoors but automatically darken when you're outside in sunlight. These are sometimes called light-responsive lenses, Transitions lenses, photo grays, or auto-tint lenses.

How Do They Work?

When you're outside, the UV rays from the sun hit the lenses and trigger tiny molecules inside to change color, making the lenses dark. This helps protect your eyes from bright light. Even on cloudy days, they still darken because UV rays are still present.

Important to know: Most photochromic lenses don’t get dark inside a car because car windshields block most UV rays. If you want lenses that do darken in the car, look for Transitions® XTRActive® lenses.

Can You Get Transitions® at Payne Glasses?

Yes! Eason Optical offers different types of photochromic lenses:

  • Generic photochromic lenses – more affordable, still change in sunlight.
  • Transitions® and Vision-Ease Life Rx® – brand-name options that cost a bit more but may offer extra performance.

Why Should You Wear Them?

Too much exposure to the sun’s UV rays can damage your eyes and even lead to cataracts. Photochromic lenses block 100% of UVA and UVB rays, so they help protect your eyes without needing to carry sunglasses around.

They're also great for kids—their eyes are more sensitive, and these lenses help keep them safe outdoors.

Customize Your Lenses

At Eason Optical, you can get photochromic lenses in just about any type:

  • Single vision
  • Progressive (no-line bifocals)
  • Lined bifocals
  • Polycarbonate and high-index materials for thinner, lighter lenses

You can also add anti-reflective coating (for clearer vision) and scratch resistance (to help your lenses last longer).

Want to Block Blue Light Too?

Eason Optical also offers photochromic lenses with blue-light blocking. These protect your eyes from:

  • UV rays outside
  • Blue light from screens (phones, computers, TVs)

Too much blue light can cause eye strain and may contribute to eye diseases like macular degeneration

In short: Photochromic lenses are a smart and easy way to protect your eyes from sunlight and screen glare, and they’re available for both adults and kids at great prices from Dilly Dollar Optical.
